In BIR municipalities, you can separate all types of waste, but different types of housing may have different waste solutions.

The standard solution in BIR is three bins for properties with their own waste solution:

  • 140-liter bin for residual waste emptied weekly. Residual waste is placed in regular plastic bags and securely tied.

  • 140-liter bin for food waste emptied every other week. Food waste is delivered in special paper bags available for free at selected stores.

  • 140- or 240-liter bin for paper, cardboard, and beverage cartons emptied every 4 weeks. Paper waste is placed loosely in the bin.

  • BIR bags for plastic packaging can be obtained at most grocery stores, and you place the bags next to the paper bin as this is collected on the same day every 4 weeks.

Different waste solutions when you don't have separate bins outside for recycling:

In housing cooperatives, various waste sorting solutions are used for the property. This could be ground-level containers, large bins, or modern underground waste solutions accessed with key cards. One such modern system could be the underground waste system in Bergen city center. When moving into a property with duch a waste solutions, you must obtain information about the waste management system from the landlord and acquire any necessary key cards.

If you live in Bergen and there are no bins outside to recycle paper waste, plastic packaging or food waste, you can use public/shared containers.  For locoation of the public containers, click to see map.
